OCIP CAMBODIA REFLECTIONS

This had been a fun and fulfilling trip. Although the trip was only 6 days, but I have gained invaluable insights and knowledge which could not be taught on books. Honestly, I did not have much expectation of the orphanage beforehand. My goal was simply to serve the community and to pass some practical knowledge to the children. Through this trip, it changes my perspective towards community service and my view of life. Furthermore, it helped me to strengthen my personal development and values through the involvement in activities and the experiences.

The words to describe the whole trip include – Fruitful, Saddening, Eye-opening, Challenging, Fun, Memorable and Tiring. What truly amazed and impressed me were the attitude of the children. Despite the hardships they endured, they carried on with life positively. Upon arrival to Hope, we were greeted with warm welcome by the children. The children were excited and ecstatic. They were jumping up and down, waving enthusiastically at us. It was heart-warming to see their happy faces and how they look forward for our arrival. They taught me the spirit of resilience and happiness. You can be happy anytime. Besides, the children were talented. They staged a song and dance performance for us. I would say that they could really sing and dance well. The children were carefree and cheerful. Apart from that, I noticed that the children look out for each another. The older boys would take care of the younger boys. They are very thoughtful and caring.

During the trip, we had de-brief almost every night to prepare and plan for the next day activities. Everyone had to stay up quite late. It was fun to be engaged in planning and packing the games, activities and donations. Although it was tiring, it was worth the time.

During my stay in Hope and CPCDO, we engaged in activities such as teaching the children                   -  Numbers, English, and Maths. We hope that this practical knowledge would be useful for them. Teaching was not easy. In Hope, the attention span of the children was relatively short, and thus we had to come up with new ideas to attract their attention.  Another problem that we had was communication barrier. I could not understand and speak Khmer, thus, I am unable explain clearly to them. I need to use hand sign to explain to them the numbers and concepts. Now, I could better appreciate the efforts that teacher puts in to teach so as to ensure the students could understand.

During the Carnival Day, the children were overjoyed when they received their prizes. Some of the children sprang up to receive their favorite “toys” and “foods”, some even hugged their toys tightly. I felt glad and happy when I saw the children received their toys. “It’s not about how much you receive but how much you give.” Giving is also a joy. I realized that we are all very blessed to have good education, good friends, and family. In times of difficulties, we may feel that we are the most “unfortunate” person in the world, we never think of people who had suffered more than us. Now, when facing difficulties, I would remind myself that it is just small stepping stones, and I can definitely overcome it. I’m truly touched at how the simple carnival would bring joy to the children at that moment.

One of the most memorable moments was when the water flooded into the classroom at CPCDO, I was impressed by the children whom stood up immediately to close the door and clear the water. They were really independent and brave.  They showed courage in the face of adversity. Thinking back, the children do not have a good place for education, and yet they are eager to learn. I realized that I’m very blessed to have great education and place to learn. Definitely, they had experienced much more ups and down and would be a better person in the future.

Another memorable moment was to spend time with the disabled girl. At CPCDO, there was a girl who could not speak or walk properly. It was quite tiring to take care of her. She could not express herself clearly and needed somebody to be with her. Despite her conditions, she was always smiling. I felt really touched and grateful to be with her and be beside her. Although the time was short, it was a memorable and fruitful one. She was strong, brave, and cheerful. She made me realized that how fortunate we are and she inspired me to have the courage to chase for my dreams and to treasure every moment that we have.
Besides teaching the children at CPCDO, we also learnt basic Khmers, such as numbers and simple phrases and also folding Origami from the children. The relationships forged with the children, friends, teachers would stay in my heart forever.

After the trip, I have changed my views on a lot of things. I realized the importance of spending time with family, the joy from simplest things and to show gratitude for everything that we have. In Singapore, we are very blessed to have almost everything that we need, “clean water”, “no heavy flood”, “no natural disaster”, “good education”, which we often takes things for granted and often have life so easy that we don’t make the most of it. In Cambodia, though their conditions are not so well off, they still stay happy. I realized it is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy that makes happiness.

I am really thankful to be given the opportunity to go for the trip and everyone who makes this trip and fruitful and memorable trip. All the memories would remain etched my heart. This will definitely not be the end. Given another opportunity, I would definitely join and contribute back to the society.
