9 September 2014 ( Day 1 )

Our 6-Days OCIP Cambodia journey begins... We touched down Kingdom of Cambodia (Phnom Penh) at around 1720. Upon arrival, we met our tour guide whom would be with us for the six days. We packed our luggage on to the tour bus which would lead us to our "home".

TRAILBLAZER

We carried our luggage to our respective rooms (6th floor). After that, we went to a local restaurant for dinner. The restaurant had Free Wifi :) Of course, everyone started using their phoness :O
After dinner, we went back to Trailblazer. We had de-brief on our activities and games for Hope Learning Centre.

10th September 2014 (Day 2)

We set off to our first destination - Hope Learning Centre. Upon arrival, we saw the children jumping up and down, running around, waving enthusiastically at us. We were greeted with warm welcome by the children. They were lovely, cute, active, adorable, energetic. They prepared a short performance - singing and dancing for us. Of course, we also prepared a short performance for them "Chicky dance~" and we danced the "Chicky dance" with the children. It was fun! After that, we started off with our first programme - teaching numbers in English. Some of the children were fast and they already knew the numbers, whereas a few could not understand what we were saying. One of the greatest problem that we had was communication barrier. As i could not speak or understand Khmer, i had to explain to them in basic English and even using hand signs and actions. I was assigned to a group of five children with age group ranging from 3 to 14 years old. They were enthusiastic to learn. We taught the children basic number one to ten in English. After the 2 hours lesson, we visit the Deum Sleng slum village which was within walking distance.

The children ran around without shoes, the dogs were thin, the chickens pecking on the ground to look for food. The conditions were bad. Some villagers collect leftover bones and scrap the leftover meat to eat. There were villagers hanging snake skins outside their homes. There were rubbish dumped outside the houses. I would say that we are really much more fortunate than the villagers over here. We have to be grateful for everything that we are blessed with, and help others that need it more than us. "It is not about how much you take, but how much you give".

After visit to Deum Sleng slum village, we proceed to have our lunch.

Then, we went back to Hope Learning Centre to continue our activities. We prepared colored dough for them, which we used for our teaching materials. We taught them to form numbers  and recognise colors using the dough. We spent about two hours playing with the dough. When we left, the children hugged us and waved goodbye to us. We had our dinner and went home. At Trailblazer, we started packing the items for donations, and also our activities for the childrens. One word to describe the day was "heartwarming." It was heartwarming to see the childrens whom welcomed us at the doorstep, jumping around, waving enthusiastically at us, giving us "hi-five" and the really great performance. Besides, the children took care of each another, like the older brother would carry the younger brother. It was heartwarming to see the scene. Before i came, i had the impression that the children might be quiet, sad, depressed of their situation, and it proves that i'm wrong. They were just as lively, active, enthusiastic, happy as the other children. I learned from them the spirit of resilience, joy, courage.
11th September 2014 (Day 3)
We continued with our teaching session at Hope Learning Centre in the morning. We taught them to fold origami - cranes, boats, hats, mouths and planes. They seemed to enjoyed it. Some childrens were running around collecting the origami, while some were very focused on folding. This wrapped up our last teaching session at Hope.
After that, we had a sumptuous lunch at a Western Restaurant.

After lunch, we got on the bus to CPCDO Orphanage. It was about an hour ride. When we got there, it was about 2.30pm... The children greeted us warmly. The children were more disciplined, sensible. It was quite a contrast from Hope. The children from CPCDO were a little shy, and introvert when they saw us and talked to us. We started by distributing clothes for them. The children would raise up their hands if they liked the clothes. I could see faces of joy when they got their clothes. Some even wore the clothes on immediately when they got it. They were really overjoyed. After distributing the clothes, we had to leave around 4pm to avoid the peak periods, whereby there would be traffic jams around.

After that,we went to the shopping mall for our dinner and of course, some shoppings~ We tried the local delights.

Vietnamese Rolls

Papaya Salad

Katong Laksa
Suprisingly, they had Katong Laksa (Singapore Local Delight). Well, it tasted quite different though. Probably it was the ingredients. Overall, it was quite delicious.
After the free n easy dinner, we got back to Trailblazer and planned for the next day. One word to wrapped up the day was "Tiring". It was a tiring and long day travelling around on bus from one places to another.

12th September 2014 (Day 4)

It's the Carnival Day for the children at Hope. We had prepared games for the children. We had the throwing ball games, ping pong balls, fishing, and lots lots of games for the children. The children would have to play the games and collect points. The points allows them to exchange for the toys and foods. After collection, we had lucky draws session for the children. They were excited and overjoyed when their names were called out during the lucky draw. One little girl hugged her plush toy tightly when she received her gift. She was overwhelmed with happiness and her eyes gleamed in joy. A little gift brings so much joy and happiness to the children. After that, it was lunch time for the children. We prepared buffet for the children and served them their lunch.

It was time to leave Hope, and we bid farewell to the children at Hope. They gave us hugs and hi-five. I felt sad, as it would be the last time that i am going to see them... They did not knew that we were leaving. We went for our lunch. We had the same food as the children for lunch.

After Lunch, we took the bus ride to CPCDO. The children at CPCDO could understand basic English. They were quite fast, intelligent and polite. They carried benches over for us to sit. They were really nice. They were good at Maths, Basic Chinese, and Basic English. It was fun to teach them. In the afternoon, it rained heavily. The water flooded in to the classroom. A few boys immediately stood up and locked the doors. Then, they took the floor squeegee and started to clean the water. After a while, the rain finally stopped.  I was really impressed by their actions. They were very independent and sensible. They knew what to do. We carried on with our lessons, teaching them numbers, colours and fruits. Well, they were very intelligent and could answer most of our questions. Apart from that, they also taught us basic numbers in Khmer. 1 - muay, 2 - pee, 3 - bay, 4 - boon, 5 - prahm, 6 - prahm muay, 7 - prahm pei, 8 - prahm bay, 9 - prahm boon, 10 - dahp. They also taught us to write the number. It was quite difficult to write it. They corrected us when we wrote it wrongly. It was fun and enjoyable to teach and learn from them. When we left, all of them stood at the door, waving goodbye enthusiastically at us. We left for our dinner and had some shopping at Factory Outlet. Then, we got back home to prepare for the next day.
One of the most memorable event was when the water flooded into the room, I was impressed by the children who stood up to clear the water. One word to describe them "Sensible". I feel that i'm slightly a pampered girl. When the water rushed in to the room, the first thing that we did was to avoid the water, while the children were the ones whom stood up to clear the water. This is something that we can learn from them. We should be independent and sensible. Despite their situation, they never gave up on life, on themselves, instead they continued to work hard and become a better person. Kudos.

13th September 2014 (Day 5)
We would be spending our whole day at CPCDO. As usual,we had our breakfast an took the long bus ride to CPCDO. The grounds to CPCDO were bumpy. This was a bad day for me... I was sick. I had terrible sore throat and fever. But, i knew i would definitely miss the children and thus i tagged along. I wanted to spend more time with them. We taught the children budgeting using the color rods. I felt weak so i sat and rested on the chair. My friends were concerned about me, and i assured them i would be fine. I drank a lot of water and ate some medicine. After resting, i felt better and could continue to join them. I played with one children whom had some disability. She could not really speak and walk properly. I had to hold both of her hands to walk her around. She would bite her hands when she could not get her things done and i felt lost when i could'nt understand her. I was spending quite some time with her the whole day. I had to feed her, pamper her, hug her, and walk with her. She was always smiling, but i did not knew whether she was really happy. She could not really express herself freely like the others. I had to asked her by pointing at the foods to ensure that she wants it. At the start, i was really confused. Slowly, i began to understand her and could communicate slightly better with her. I began feeding her and took care of her about half the day. The disabled girl called everyine "Ma..." , which was the only thing that she could probably speak. The children were quite concerned about the disabled girl and gave her the food that she wanted. They were really nice people. The girl enjoyed walking around and plucking leaves. After feeding her, i had lunch together with the rest of the children.  We sat in between the children and ate with them.
The children could eat quite a lot. It may be because they were starved in the past so they want to eat as much as they could thus they would not be starved. I heard one of the story of the baby girl who was abandoned. She had no emotions. She do not smile and laugh. She would keep on eating and not stop. This may be because of the bad experiences that she had in the past. It was really saddening. After lunch, we prepared for our Carnival games! Games time! I had terrible throat pain... Thankfully, my friend helped me in the carnival. So thankful and grateful to have great friends around me. I knew the children definitely enjoyed themselves in the games. They were polite, and thanked us when we gave them the points. The prize giving session was the best part of the day. I'm sure that the children loved their prizes. Some of them jumped in joy upon receiving their prizes and some hugged their prizes and kept it in their room. They were so cute and adorable! love them so much! From their faces of joy, i knew that the efforts, time that we placed in the activities had been fruitful. After Carnival, we started with making Origami. Suprisingly, the children were skilful at folding Origami. They could make bird, flowers, planes, cranes, birds, and they knew much more than us. They taught us how to fold instead. I'm really amazed and impressed by them. It is time to leave after all the games and everything. We took a last photo together and left the place. I would miss them. They would be a better person definitely. Given a chance, i would definitely go back to visit them. We proceed to have our dinner at TK Avenue. We went to eat DimSum at Chinese Restaurant. It was a scrumptious meal. One word to describe my feeling was "Emotions." I was sad that we had to leave, on the other hand, i'm happy that they knew more than us, and they learned something useful.
14th September 2014 (Day 6)
Last day at Cambodia... We were ready for the garage sale in the morning. Some of the students helped to packed the clothes outside and started the sale. The crowd rushed in when we started the sale. It was packed like sardine. The locals were choosing the clothes and grabbed a lot of clothes. After the garage sale, we went to visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. It was the place where people were executed and imprisoned in the past. About 17,000 people were executed... In the museum, they showed the rooms and the equipment. There were photos of the torture, which i felt really uneasy.

After that, we went to a nearby cafe (Toto) to eat ice-cream. Then, it is time for SHOPPING! We proceed to have our lunch buffet at BASSAC Restaurant.

After lunch, we visited the Russian Market, which had many are like night market, and there were lot of tents and many shops. Lots of shopping! After shopping, it was time to leave Cambodia. We ended our journey with the song "Holiday, I Love you, Oh ohohoh" which was a song taught by the tour guide.

Arrival to SINGAPORE! Home Sweet Home! Feeling so blessed to see my family, so grateful for everything that i had in my life. This experience definitely an eye-opener, meaningful and fruitful trip for me. I had learnt so much skills and knowledge which could not be taught. Thank you everyone for being there!
